Fungal Awareness Week β Awareness Walk (29th September 2025) The walk was led by Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal (Principal, AMC/PGMI/LGH), Prof. Dr. Atif Shehzad (Head, Department of Dermatology), and Dr. Faryad Hussain (Medical Superintendent, LGH). Faculty members including Dr. Wajieha Saeed (Associate Professor), Dr. Eima Shaheen (Senior Registrar), and consultant dermatologists Dr. Samreen Rafi, Dr. Shaiqa Ali, Dr. Umara Siddique, Dr. Ahmed Kazmi, Dr. Farhana Nazir, Dr. Hina Manzoor, Dr. Afshan Ahmed, Dr. Sobia Ali, Dr. Nida Eily, and Dr. Uzma Mirza also participated. The event aimed to raise awareness about fungal infections, which are common yet often underestimated skin conditions caused by different types of fungi. These infections can affect the skin, nails, hair, and mucous membranes, and may range from superficial to invasive in nature. Awareness messages included: πΉ Risk Factors Warm, humid climates Poor hygiene Excessive sweating Immunocompromised states (e.g., diabetes, HIV) Prolonged antibiotic or steroid use πΉ Common Fungal Infections β Tinea (ringworm) β Candidiasis β Onychomycosis (fungal nail infection) β Pityriasis versicolor πΉ Prevention & Management Keep skin clean and dry Avoid sharing personal items Use antifungal creams, powders, or oral medications as prescribed Wear breathable clothing Maintain proper hygiene Seek early treatment to prevent complications On this occasion, Principal Prof. Dr. Farooq Afzal emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about fungal infections, stating that βearly diagnosis and timely treatment of fungal diseases are essential to prevent complications and reduce disease burden. Awareness campaigns like this play a key role in educating the community and promoting preventive healthcare.β The walk successfully promoted public and professional awareness about fungal infections, their prevention, and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. It marked a meaningful step towards community education and reducing both the stigma and complications associated with fungal diseases
