World wide, stroke is the second most common cause of death and third most common cause of disability, while the incidence is decreasing in high income countries. it is increasing in low income countries like Pakistan where there was not a single intervention stroke centre until the First Stroke Centre in the country was established in December 2014 due to untiring efforts of Dr. Umair Rashid Ch. & his team, at Lahore General Hospital, Lahore. So for 55 cases were treated at Neuroangiography suite.
Medicaladvances in stroke treatment have greatly improved survival rates and disability from stroke during the last decade, these advances include cerebral angiographic techniques to remove the blood clot from brain vessel called Mechanical Thrombectomy.
Results from the DAWN Trial were presented at the European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC; 16-18 May, Prague, Czech Republic), providing compelling evidence that more patients suffering ischaemic stroke may benefit from endovascular treatment. While previous randomized clinical trials have proven the benefits of stent retrievers within six hours of stroke onset, the DAWN Trial is the first to evaluate the late window and wake-up stroke patients population.
Defuse 3 Criteria
Thrombectomy for Stroke at 6 to 16 hourrs with selection by perfusion imaging.
Neurointevention at LGH
The first & only dedicated Neuroradiology Department developed as integral part of Neurosurgery at Lahore General Hospital in 1970. Neuro-endovascular treatment for CCF, carotid stenting, aneurysm (coiling) AVM & Dural AVF (embolization) was started in 2003 which has saved more than 5200 lives since then.
For the first time in Pakistan Aneurysms are being coiled within 48 hours or rupture preventing re-bleeding and dread full complications which has drastically decreased morbidly and mortality due to subarachnoid haemorrhage.
